PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Believe it or not, the concept of coaching in the academic world has been around since the mid 1500’s. I really only knew about the concept of coach as it pertains to sports, that is, until I became a teacher.
I grew up in an urban school environment and played a lot of sports. I had wonderful coaches work with me throughout middle and high school. They were there to make sure I trained hard and honed in on my skills. We made it to the state championships a few times and created a lot of amazing memories! Something was working!
I never had much of a vertical jump, so I remember my coach making me do special drills much longer than my other high jumping friends. He believed that those repeated drills would help develop specific muscles and rhythm. My coach figured out my trouble spots and gave me tips, tricks and tools to improve. My vertical didn’t increase in astronomical ways but it did improve. I had to go to practice 5 days a week for 2 hours each day. I improved because I had a guide…. someone who knew what I needed to do to be my best. That’s a coach! And, that’s really not any different from what I do as an academic coach. I find your strengths and I find what’s not working so well. Then I give you tips, tricks and resources to help guide you toward your goal. It takes practice and determination from you. And then you will find success!
